Dated April 3,2011. In the March 11 Japan Earthquake, uncountable lives of dogs, cats and cattle were lost. Also numerous dogs and cats lost their owners, and were left alone without food.
Due to the nuclear plants’ accidents in Fukushima, nearby residens evacuated in panic, and many animals were left behind. Some of them were with chains, and some others were left inside of houses with no chance to survive. Quite a few residents said they thought they would be able to come back home soon.
Japanese local governments in general are very strict with animal owners in case of emergency. For instance, an old woman living alone took her dog with her to evacuate, and when she got on a rescue bus, her dog was rejected. She tearfully had to leave the dog there.
Because pets are not welcome at many refuge shelters, their owners must stay in their cars together with their animals, or leave their pets in broken houses. At present they are facing another obstacle that most temporary public houses offered to them do not permit pets to live with.
We appreciate if you could send a e-mail to the Japanese Ministry of the Environment to take actions not to repeat this kind of tragedy in the future, and to allow the owners to live with their pets in the temporary public houses. Please tell the Ministry that pets could give the refugees courage to rebuild their lives.
